History
Western Missouri Mental Health Center, an agency for the Department of Mental
Health, is located on Hospital Hill in the Heart of Kansas City to provide
comprehensive psychiatric care to patients from Kansas City and seven
surrounding counties. WMMHC serves as the University of Missouri-Kansas City's
Department of Psychiatry, fullfilling academic and research needs. In January
2004 WMMHC moved into a new 220,000 square foot, 5-story facility.
WMMHC opened in 1954 as the first racially intergrated pyschiatric hospital in Kansas City to serve patients of the city hospital system. Today, a full-time faculty provides clinical service at the 115-bed center with more than 200 patient admissions a month and more than 7,000 ememergency room visits annually, specializing in active treatment
Western Missouri Mental Health Center is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation for Hospital Organizations. The accreditation indicates that quality standards of care and treatment are practiced.
