




DIDACTICS
Didactics
Throughout the year a variety of seminars are presented to interns, and these
seminars are generally presented by psychology staff. In addition to seminars
which typically require 2 hours per week, interns are required to attend up to
two case conferences per week, as well as a weekly grand rounds presentation
which is conducted by a guest speaker and covers a variety of topics
CORE SEMINARS
Mental Status Examination– Presentation
and discussion of information relevant to conducting a mental status
examination.
Addictions– Explore and understand the
concepts of addiction and the strategies for enhancing treatment motivation.
Forensic Psychology– Overview of the
role of mental health professionals in court. Topics include court-ordered
evaluations, report writing, expert testimony, and related psycho-legal issues.
Psychopharmacology– Review of
psychotropic medications tailored to the training needs of interns.
Group Therapy– Presentation and
discussion of group therapy strategies for the severe and chronically ill
inpatient population.
Severe and Chronic Mental Illness
– Presentation and discussion of treatment for individuals with severe and
chronic mental illness. Focus is placed on effectively dealing with
motivational challenges encountered when working with this population.
Psychotherapy and Assessment with Children and Adolescents
– Presentation and discussion of diagnostic and treatment issues specific to
the child/adolescent population.
OPTIONAL SEMINARS
(based on interest/needs of interns and availability)
Cultural Diversity– In the past this
seminar focused on the growing body of literature related to ethnicity, age,
ability, lifestyle, and other diversity issues. Focus was placed on acquainting
interns with psychologist roles currently identified as effective in
multi-cultural assessment, diagnosis and treatment.
Personality Disorders– Past seminars
have focused on the Millon theory of personality.
Psychological Assessment– Past seminars
have centered on the presentation of information for psychological testing
procedures and/or discussions of strategies for the interpretation of test data
of specific cases..
Religious and Spiritual Issues in Clinical Practice–
Presentation and discussion of religious and spiritual issues that may impact
the clinical practice of psychology.
Grief and Bereavement – A presentation
and discussion of working with grief and bereavement in severe and chronically
ill inpatient populations.
